Erica il Cane, from We Were Living in the Woods.
“Born and studied in Bologna, Italy, Erica’s evolution to gallery work has seen depictions of animals in unique, human situations rendered in Victorian-like style illustrations, etchings, and short animated films. The art is often described as imagery from a dark fairy tale, in which animals are shown within the darkness of human nature, focusing on themes of alienation, satire, existentialism. Both gallery and mural work has also been hailed as influential works advocating vegetarianism and animal rights.”

Ben De Nunez and Al White - Rocky and His Friends, 1959.
“Rocky And His Friends is interesting because it depicts the characters in a very different way than they appeared in the TV series. White sees the characters as solid objects, not flat designs, and he renders them in a variety of different lighting situations. This book also has a nice balance of textures.”

Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870-1966), from The Arabian Nights, 1909.
“Parrish was one of the most successful artists of the golden age of illustration. It is said that during the depression, there were more Maxfield Parrish prints hanging on the walls of American homes than there were American homes!

Kay Nielsen - East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North
“Kay Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1886. He moved to London in 1911 but returned to his hometown in 1916. He worked in the theatre during World War I designing stage sets for the Theater Royal productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Aladdin. In 1924 he illustrated Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales and then in 1925 he illustrated Hansel and Gretel and other Stories From the Brothers Grimm. Later on during his life he created about twenty Arabian Nights paintings,
then he was called on by Walt Disney to do some work on Fantasia. He ended up doing the “Ave Maria” and the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequences before soon he was laid off. He died of poverty in 1957.”
