“Haruki Murakami has slammed Japan’s nuclear policy following the emergency at Fukushima, declaring that his country should have said “no” to nuclear after learning in 1945 ‘just how badly radiation leaves scars on the world and human wellbeing’”.

Chad VanGaalen — Beehives
Being the upstanding Canadian gent that he is, Chad VanGaalen just released a brand new EP to benefit relief efforts in Japan. It’s dubbed Your Tan Looks Supernatural, and features 6 outtakes from his forthcoming Diaper Island album (out 5/17 on Flemish Eye). Hear the sweeping, string-filled “Beehives” and get the full release from bandcamp.

Kiyoshi Awazu - poster, 1975
“Although we have no detailed knowledge about the functions of posters in our life today, at least the fact remains that they are the live evidence of culture of each age. What makes the street as the street should be are posters, and as a Polish designer is saying, they are actually “the art of the street”. I think it is because we can have them at any place and any time, not at such respectable place as at the exhibition-galleries but in crowded place, in restaurants and tea-rooms, on dirty walls, on windows, or as pin-ups in private rooms; they exist freely and are pasted as if they were “exposed”. Therefore, posters are the origin of environment art, and at the same time they seem to turn the street itself into a pop museum.”
Bruce Osborn - Oyako Series.
“Oyako means parents-children in Japanese and is the title of a series I have been photographing since 1982. In the process of photographing hundreds of parents and children it has become my life work. Focusing on this basic relationship, I am able to see the changes that Japanese society is going through.”

NUKE IT FROM ORBIT of the Day: Actroid-F, an ultra-realistic android developed by Japanese roboticist Kokoro, was publicly unveiled in Tokyo this week.
With too-humanoid-for-comfort facial expressions, and her assigned role as inpatient caretaker (presumably to provide comfort and security), Actroid-F is proof positive of our impending demise.

Haruki Murakami Novel 1Q84 Nearly Translated into English
“In an interview with the Japanese site Asahi, translator Jay Rubin shared thoughts about working with Haruki Murakami–revealing the impending deadlines for the English translation of Murakami’s three-volume novel, 1Q84.
Rubin has translated a number of Murakami novels, including Norwegian Wood and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. The translator turned in his translation of the first book in January and must complete the second book by November 15th. He thought that translator Philip Gabriel had the same deadline for the third book.”
