On this day in 1915: “A shaken telephone operator at Rocky Mountain House sent this warning to the City of Edmonton: “My God, Edmonton, look out; the river’s up 20 feet and still jumping.” Heavy rains caused the North Saskatchewan River to rise 11 metres above the low-level mark. Nearly 50 homes were swept away in the torrential waters; 500 more were either partly or entirely submerged. At least 2,000 people were left homeless, and more than 35 city blocks were under water.”

Strathcona Bridge 2
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - mailed December 1907
The artists at Valentine have pointed their paintbrushes and produced a night-time scene. This card has a lower 6 digit number than my immediately previous posting of the same scene by day, so perhaps this is from an earlier negative?

Strathcona Bridge
Edmonton, Alberta - no date. Probably 1910-1920?
A streetcar about to cross over the bridge denotes modernity and progress (electricity!) … as does the presence of industry.
